80,000 Hours has used the importance, tractability, neglectedness framework to identify the ten most promising focus areas. Each area receives a final score, with each two-point difference corresponding to an order of magnitude (80,000 Hours 2016a).
Given their baseline assumptions, 80,000 Hours concluded that risks from artificial intelligence, its highest-rated area, is over a thousand times more promising than developing-world health, its lowest-rated area. Users can take a quiz and vary the assumptions (80,000 Hours 2016b).
80,000 Hours group these focus areas into two categories: “recommended” and “sometimes recommended”. Risks from artificial intelligence, promoting effective altruism, and prioritization research are “recommended”, whilst the remaining areas are “sometimes recommended”. They also list potential focus areas that they have not yet investigated.
